ARTS AND CRAFTS MOVEMENT

THE ARTS AND CRAFTS MOVEMENT WAS AN INTERNATIONAL DESIGN MOVEMENT THAT ORIGINATED IN ENGLAND AND EVOLVED BETWEEN 1880 AND 1910, AND CONTINUING ITS INFLUENCE UP TO THE 1930s. ESTABLISHED BY THE ARTIST AND WRITER WILLIAM MORRIS AND INSPIRED BY WRITINGS OF JOHN RUSKIN. THE MOVEMENT WAS A REACTION AGAINST THE POOR QUALITY OF DESIGN DURING THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION. WHAT DEVELOPED IN THE BRITISH ISLES SOON SPREAD TO THE REST OF EUROPE AND NORTH AMERICA.

THE MOVEMENT SPOKE TRUTH TO MATERIALS AND DEDICATED THE PERIOD TO RECAPTURING THE SPIRIT AND QUALITY OF MEDIEVAL CRAFTSMANSHIP. THEY PRODUCED SUCH HANDCRAFTED WORK LIKE WALLPAPER AND TEXTILES, AND BY THE END OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY, THE ARTS AND CRAFTS IDEALS HAD INFLUENCED ARCHITECTURE, BOOK MAKING, PAINTING, GRAPHICS AND ALSO THE DECORATIVE ARTS, INCLUDING METAL AND WOOD WORK, JEWELRY AND FURNITURE.

THE VISION WAS TO LINK ART TO INDUSTRY BY APPLYING THE VALUES OF FINE ART TO THE PRODUCTION OF COMMERCIAL DESIGN.THEY BELIEVED THAT HAND CRAFTED OBJECTS WERE SUPERIOR TO THOSE MADE BY MACHINE. THEIR DESIGNS WERE INSPIRED BY BRITISH FLORA AND FAUNA AND INFLUENCED BY THE GOTHIC REVIVAL (1830-1880). THEY WERE INTERESTED IN ALL THINGS MEDIEVAL, WHICH WAS VISIBLE IN THEIR DESIGNS.

THE ARTS AND CRAFTS MOVEMENT HAS RAISED THE STATUS OF DESIGN IN ART EDUCATION AND ESTABLISHED IT AS AN ESSENTIAL ELEMENT IN THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS.
